Rachel Christie 20 years old made history yesterday as she was crowned the first black Miss England in the competition. This time the beauty competitions changed away from the Barbie looks that Rachel Christie Crowned First black Miss England.

Rachel Christieis Linford Christie’s niece who is also on course to appear at the London 2012 Olympics, chased down the competition to claim the prestigious prize at the event in central London. Rachel belongs to Kensington, West London told organizers: “My ambition in life is to win gold in the 2012 Olympics. I want to be successful in whatever I choose to do in life.”

Rachel Christie was the bookies’ favorites to clinch the title. Protesters held aloft banners bearing slogans ‘every woman is a queen’ and ‘beauty is not skin deep’.

Rachel Christie was given the honorary title of Miss Fitness in the Miss London contest last year. After taking the Miss London crown she was ready to win Miss England crown said “I’m used to competition, because if you fall down you just pick yourself up again.”

Also added “I don’t know why so few black girls enter. I think they think they won’t win because beauty queens always have blond hair and blue eyes. I think they need to advertise more to change that. I’d be so proud if I were the first black Miss England.”

Rachel Christie lives with her mother, brother and sister in west London. Her father was dead when she was only eight after becoming involved in a drugs war. Maya Schultz, managing director of Acclaim, an agency which specialises in ethnic minority models, said: “If she becomes Miss England that would be a really big deal. England is such a cosmopolitan country and yet we’ve never had a black Miss England. It would definitely shake things up.”
