Hetch Hetchy Reservoir in California, Photos & review
Hetch Hetchy Reservoir is a lake, which is in Yosemite National Park, about 65 miles (105 km) northeast from the city of Merced, California. The name “Hetch Hetchy” actually comes from the Native American Sierra Miwok language, and is a grass with ripe seeds that grows in the valley. Hetch Hetchy Reservoir has a capability of 360,000 acre.ft (440,000 dam³) and is formed by the 364 ft (111 m) actual importance. O’Shaughnessy Dam is located in Yosemite National Park, and creates the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir. It is named for former San Francisco chief engineer and the original chief engineer of the Hetch Hetchy Project Michael M. O’Shaughnessy. O’Shaughnessy Dam is near Yosemite’s western boundary, but the long, narrow, finger like reservoir stretches eastward for about 12.5 km (over 8 miles). Hetch Hetchy is a municipal water supply and its water is not filtered so the swimming and boating are prohibited. Fishing is allowed only from the lake shore.

The best place I have visited
! It’s a elegant place you can see here a millions of gallons of water and a amazing waterfall in a perfect setting. Do not agree to its beautiful for you, the reservoir’s main purpose is to supply the San Francisco area with water and electrical power. This reservoir is located in a isolated and quiet area of the Yosemite National park. It makes a great location for picnics or meditation. In adding, this place has shadow heads for numerous hikes. The road to the reservoir is closed from October to June.
Best Day Trip
Hetch Hetchy has fantastic views.There are lovely water falls, one of which is Wapama Falls, where we hiked to. Right now (May) there are wildflowers everywhere, butterflies of all kinds, and very soft weather. Once you reach Wapama Falls, you can lie around in the smog from the falls to cool down or hike over the bridges luckily it was low water so we were capable to find a shade under. The big lake is created by the Hutchie dam, which is an amazing piece of engineering. You can walk along the top of the dam and see the folkway. To get to anything charming you need to take a hike.
frightening Driving is not for me!
There is limited parking but there wasn’t a problem as we were visiting out of peak season. This is a minor known alternative area very close to Yosemite National Park about 16 miles off Highway 120. I missed a lot because I am afraid of driving in those zigzag rounded slopy two way roads, with no barrier on the face side. I wish they provided the shuttle from the entrance itself with middle stops, like at the entry of the Glacier Point Road, to the valley from dawn to sunset so that people like me could enjoy the beauty of Yosemite, its sunrise and sunset etc. Providing the shuttle bus will also decrease the traffic inside the park, thus leaving it un pollut Interesting tour but not as great as Yosemite.
