John Earl Madden played college football at the University of Oregon and the College of San Mateo before transferring in San Luis Obispo, California at California Polytechnic State University, during completing a BS in Education in 1959 and an MA in Education in 1961, he played both offense and defense there. On 26 December, 1959, John Madden married Virginia Fields. They have two sons, Joseph and Michaellive and live in Pleasanton, California.
In the 1980s and 1990s, Madden broadcast with Pat Summerall on CBS and later FOX. For ABC’s Monday Night Football, he was also the last commentator. In 2006 this show moved to ESPN. A commentator for NBC Sunday Night Football was his last regular role.
Several books has written and served by Madden as a commercial pitchman for various products and retailers. On 16 April, 2009, he retired from broadcasting, in order to spend more time with his family.
