If there’s one thing we can all agree on, it’s that we’d like to slow the skin’s aging process down. Nobody wants to see their skin age to where they begin to see the formation of wrinkles and age spots. While we may not be able to completely do away with it, because after all it is part of getting older, there are some things that we can do to slow the process down. We may not be able to turn back the clock, but we can certainly maintain great-looking skin as time marches on!
There are many things that we do to our skin that can either have helpful or harmful effect. If you do too many of the things that are harmful, you will find that your skin ages faster, but if you opt for more of the helpful routines and practices, you will find that it helps to slow the process down. Indeed you can push those wrinkles off for a few more years if you make the right choices.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends that to age healthily, it’s important to eat a healthy diet, get plenty of exercise, avoid smoking, find ways to de-stress, and to be wise when going in the sun. Doing all of these things can certainly have a beneficial impact on your skin, which is your largest organ and the one that everyone happens to see. It’s a little hard to hide our skin, so we want to do what we can to keep it looking great for the long haul.
Some additional tips for caring for and protecting your skin, which will help with the anti-aging skincare process include:
- Forgoing the tanning beds and booths. Most people are familiar with the damage that being in the sun can do to your skin, but they are not as knowledgeable about indoor tanning beds. Unfortunately, those tanning beds are also dangerous to the skin. They will increase chances for skin cancer, and they can help speed up the skin’s aging process. If you have a strong desire to have a tanned look to your skin, opt for a spray-on tan, as they tend to be safer and less damaging to the skin.
- Keep your skin moisturized. Many people have dry skin, or dry skin patches, because they are not keeping it moisturized. Being in dry air, whether indoors or outside, can lead to dry skin as well. This can lead to cracks in the skin, itching, and other problems. It’s a good idea to use a humidifier if the air in your home is too dry. Also, limit your bathing time, because too much of it will dry the skin out. Keep your showers to around five minutes, pat yourself dry when you get out, and then be sure to apply a good quality moisturizer. Apply moisturizer every day so that it keeps your skin from drying out.
- Address problems if you have them. If your skin has conditions such as eczema or acne, be sure to get the products you need to keep it under control. You can clear up the face and other areas of your skin with the right products like a good acne wash. The resounding answer by those who have used it is that yes, it does. There are also measures you can take to keep eczema at bay.
- Get enough sleep each night. There is a reason we refer to it as getting our beauty sleep. If you don’t get enough sleep it will start to show in your face and in your skin. Get in the habit of getting the recommended amount of sleep for your age. It will keep your mind alert, keep your body healthier, and will help your skin slow the aging process down some. Create a nighttime routine that starts by cleaning your face, moisturizing it, and then going to bed in a cool, dark room.
We may all continue to age, but when it comes to our skin, we can age gracefully. Taking care of our skin will help keep our skin looking and feeling great for many years to come!
