Backache and Miscarriage: Worries during Pregnancy

Pregnancy although is a great experience, it comes with its own share of worries and troubles. Common among these are morning sicknesses, backaches and miscarriages. Morning sickness refers to the nausea and vomiting experienced in the morning. However for some it lasts throughout the day. It is said almost half of all pregnant women experience backaches. As the baby grows in size, it increases the hollow in your back thus causing it to pain. Another common worry during pregnancy is miscarriage. Let us take a look at the two major worries during pregnancy-backache and miscarriage.

The main reason for backaches can be attributed to your hormones like progesterone and relaxin, which soften the ligaments, the spinal and pelvic joints. As a result of the baby, the weight is more at the front, thus causing it to ache. Also, because of the weight the muscles in your back strain to support your balance, thus causing your lower back to ache.  A good exercise regime that strengthens your back and abdominal muscles helps you to take care of the back pain. Swimming is a very good option to relive you of back pain.

A good posture is also important to avoid a backache. When bending down never, bend your back. You can bend your knees, but not your back. While lifting heavy objects, keep the object close to your body, to avoid straining your back.  Remember, when your mom always reminded you to mind your posture? Well, a bad posture is many a time, the main reason for a backache.

The second major worry during pregnancy is miscarriage. It is believed to the main reason for pregnancy loss, almost 10-12%. It is also called Spontaneous Abortion (SAB). It usually happens within the first 20 weeks. Although a majority of miscarriages happen in the first 13 weeks of pregnancy. The reason for these miscarriages can be varied. The most common reason (during the first trimester) can be chromosomal abnormality. These could be due to a faulty egg or a sperm cell that’s not healthy.

Other common reasons for miscarriage could be hormonal problems, or infections or even health problems of the mother (thyroid for example). It could also be due to the lifestyle choices of the mother. Smoking, drinking, drug abuses, malnutrition, exposure to radiation are someone of the main lifestyle choices that lead to miscarriage. Age is also a major factor in miscarriage. As the mother gets older, the chance of miscarriage increases.

There are a few indicators of miscarriage. They include backache (these could range from mild to severe and are worse than normal cramps), weight loss, white-pink mucus, contractions, brown or red bleeding, tissues with clot like material passing from the vagina and even sudden decrease in symptoms of pregnancy.

Fetal tissues are thrown out during or after miscarriage. However, if this does not happen, a procedure called dilation and curettage or D&C is performed.

There isn’t a tailor made treatment for miscarriage and treatment is often cause-specific. As a mother, what you can do to avoid miscarriage is by keeping yourself healthy before you try and conceive and also try and conceive at the right age.
