Flatbread is a simple version of bread prepared using the most basic ingredients viz. flour, water, salt and yeast(optional). Breads are normally baked in ovens but they can also be baked in a grill. The grill used can be either gas or charcoal. Charcoal grill, in fact, adds a certain zing to the bread enhancing its flavor. This flatbread can be made a pizza base or can be eaten with other gravies. Following is the recipe for flat bread baked on a grill.


Ingredients:

  • 1 1/3 cup Flour
  • ½ tsp active dry yeast
  • 1tbsp Olive oil
  • 1tsp salt
  • Rolling pin
  • Brush
  • Grill

Method:

  • In a medium size bowl take 1 ½ cup warm water and sprinkle the yeast. Stir it well to dissolve and set it aside for 10 minutes until its frothy.
  • Stir together the flour and salt in a bowl. To this add the yeast mixture and olive oil and mix well.
  • Add water to it in required amounts until the dough is firm and elastic.
  • Oil the bowl where the dough is kneaded and rotate it gently in the bowl so that it is coated with the olive oil.
  • Cover the dough with a damp cloth or a plastic wrap and set it aside for 30minutes.
  • Pre-heat the grill. If it’s a gas grill turn it on a high and allow it to heat for 10 minutes. If it is a charcoal grill wait until the charcoal is gray and ash-like.
  • After 30 minutes of setting aside, turn the dough on a lightly floured surface.  Divide into equal sized balls.
  • With a rolling pin roll out the dough balls into 1/8” thick round.
  • Now prepare the grill for the final baking process. For a gas grill, turn the flame down to a low and for a charcoal grill, move the charcoal to one side so that you can grill the bread on the side where there is no charcoal (to avoid the bread from getting burnt).
  • Brush olive oil on one side of the flattened dough and place it on the grill with the oiled side down and close it with a cover.
  • Check the break after 2 minutes.  The bottom of the bread should be lightly browned. If not, grill for 2-3 minutes more with the lid on.
  • Brush oil on the top of the bread and flip it on the grill to cook the other side. Close the grill lid and check the bread after 2 minutes.
  • Sprinkle hot bread with salt before serving.
  • Thus flatbread is ready. You can top it with ingredients for pizza or make an open-faced sandwich.

    i want to use flat bread recipe for sandwiches. recipe for pizza makes the bread dough and crunchy. i want flat soft bread. Please guide me.
