Owing to a rather sedentary lifestyle led by most people in the world today, a lot of health issues emerge out of poor fitness levels. Indulgence in junk foods, lack of exercise, lack of basic physical movement or activities, dependence on machines to run our lives, untimely work schedules and eating habits are all reasons that lead to an unhealthy body composure. Most people from developed and developing nations who thrive in the urban setting of the society are obese owing to all therefore mentioned habits. There are some who are overall obese and others who are fat at certain places. Amongst these, the latter populations of comparatively thinner people face fat storage around their torso. It is that part of the body that is more prone to fat storage.

Fatty tissue that is stored in the stomach carries greater health risks as compared to the fat around the buttocks and thighs. Certain studies prove that abdominal fat can bring about raised blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, high blood sugar levels, insulin resistance syndrome and heart disorders. Fat storage around the belly can be caused by various factors like faulty eating habits, inclusion of foods that give you a bloated feeling, the quality and quantity of the food you eat and how often you eat it, lethargic lifestyle with lack of physical exercise or even stress levels that triggers the release of a hormone called cortisol which in turn stimulates the storage of fat around the belly.
Inculcating discipline in your eating habits and understanding the benefits of keeping your fat levels at bay sure does help solve this weighty issue. Here are a few exercise tips that would help you achieve your goal of attaining the perfectly toned abs:
Exercises For your upper abs:
Lie on your back on the floor and place your hands to the side of your head or crossed in front of your chest. Keep your knees bent at an angle of 45 degrees from the ground and keep your feet grounded firmly. Now slowly rise up half way such that your back, shoulders and head is off the ground. Breathe out the way up and breathe in the way down. Do this exercise in sets of 3-4 for about 15-30 times at each set. Make sure you do not come all the way up touching your chest to the knees, because this might damage your back without any effect on the stomach muscles.
Exercises For lower abs:
Lie on your back on the floor and keep your hands behind your head or rest it on either side of your body. Lift your legs at an angle of 90 degrees from the ground with bent knees. Make sure while lifting your legs you use your lower abdominal muscles and not that of your thighs. Breathe out on the way up and breathe in on the way down. Repeat this in sets of 3-4, about 15-30 times each set.
Exercises For your oblique:
Lie on your back on the floor with left leg bent at a 45 degree angle to the ground. Place the right foot on the left knee and both hands at the two sides of your head. Lift the head and shoulders off the ground and turn to your left, the direction opposite to your right foot. Breathe on the way up, in on the way down. Repeat it in sets of 3-4 with each set containing 15-30 repetitions of this position.
The bicycle exercise:
It is same as the above exercise with a slight difference when it comes to the leg movement. Here the legs are in movement above the ground to and fro such that it resembles the action of riding a bicycle but at a 45 degree angle off the ground. This exercise gives results on all the three abdominal regions-the upper, the lower and the oblique.
Miscellaneous exercises:
After practicing the above exercises on a regular basis, you can always go for additional exercises for toning your abs like exercise ball crunches, cable crunches, weighted crunches, lying oblique leg raises, standing side bends, seated barbell twists, cross-knee crunches and so on.
Fun exercises:
Certain other exercises involve a lot of entertainment along with the burn in stomach fat. They include belly dancing, hula hoops, Pilates and yoga.
