Hypoglycemia also referred to as low blood glucose or blood sugar levels, occurs when blood sugar levels drops below the normal. It is prominent in diabetics and is usually a side effect of diabetic medications. Low blood sugar condition can also occur in non-diabetic patients. Glucose is the main supply of energy for the body that is acquired from carbohydrate rich foods like rice, potatoes, bread, cereal, milk, fruits and sweets. This glucose is broken down by insulin to supply energy and any extra glucose is stored as glycogen. At the event of a fall in blood glucose, another hormone called glucagon signals the liver to breakdown the stored glycogen. In diabetic patients when the glucagon hormone fails to function hypoglycemia occurs.

Hypoglycemia is not such a serious condition and can be conveniently treated by just consuming an adequate amount of glucose rich foods. Although, if left unchecked, it can get worse causing confusion, clumsiness, dizziness and at times might also lead to severities like seizures, coma and even death. To keep these effects at bay one must follow a balanced diet and follow instructions of the physician because the treatment differs from one individual to the other.
Fabricated diet plan for Hypoglycemia
Following is a fabricated diet plan for typical cases of hypoglycemia:
- To start off, you must first know what your body reaction is towards certain foods that are a part of your regular diet and conclude accordingly which foods can be avoided. List out the food you consume in a span of ten days and correlate symptoms found in the body, if any, in response to the intake of that particular food. Eliminate those foods from your diet that may give a clear indication of being a major cause of hypoglycemic symptoms. This is the most inexpensive way of correcting this condition.
- Plan to avoid those foods, drinks and chemicals that are known to cause hypoglycemia. These may include the major food groups like sugar, white flour, alcohol, caffeine and tobacco.
- One must take these steps with ultimate care. Avoiding altogether foods that you have been consuming in larger quantities earlier may not be advisable. Instead a steady and gradual decrease in the quantities consumed is preferable. The same is true for other substances like tobacco and alcohol wherein if the addiction towards these substances is severe, one must seek the doctor’s help to come out of the habit at a progressive rate.
- Introduce wholesome foods into your diet. Naturally occurring food with high nutritional value and no added preservatives are to be consumed. Such foods may include lean meats, poultry without skin, whole grains, vegetables and fruits that are not too rich in glucose. A positive outlook towards the restricted yet nutritional foods available is to be inculcated in order to enjoy your diet.
- Never should you overeat, eating smaller quantities of food at small intervals is highly recommended.
- Keep yourself armed with certain foods that would provide your body adequate energy at times of need. Keep quick snacks in your refrigerator at home and carry some to places of travel.
- Care should be taken in the kind of fruits you eat. During early stages of hypoglycemia you cannot just eat any other fruit. Dry fruits are to be completely avoided.
- Care must also be exercised on the amount of natural foods or drinks you take in. Even if juices are natural sources of nutrition they contain high amounts of sugar. The quantities consumed must be taken into consideration according to your physician’s advice.
- Some medications contain caffeine and if these are causing you any discomfort you must put forth the problem to the physician.
- Try and read cookbooks with recipes containing no or low sugar.
- Never skip breakfast.
Thus with proper care and control over the intake of the kind of foods you consume would help you in the long run in keeping the after effects of hypoglycemia.
