Low-oxalate diets are useful in controlling kidney stones. Low oxalate foods and recipes should be preferred in the diet. Kidney stones are made of calcium oxalate in more than 75% patients in the United States. Oxalate is a chemical found in a variety of plants.
People have increased levels of oxalic acid in their urine or who have a history of forming kidney stones then low-oxalate diet is prescribed. Most oxalate found in urine is made in the body and does not come from the diet, so low oxalate diet is not always effective in reducing urinary oxalic acid levels. People with a predisposition to stones are encouraged to drink plenty of fluids also.
