The grapefruit diet is also called as Hollywood diet, but as the title suggests Mayo clinic grapefruit diet, it seems that grapefruit diet is made by Mayo clinic. In reality, there is no connection of Mayo clinic and Grapefruit diet. The Mayo Clinic Grapefruit Diet is not authorized by the Mayo Clinic and actually it is a fad diet that has been existed in the United States since 1930s and is not recommended by Mayo clinic in any way. It has been passed from person to person for more than 30 years and most veteran dieters have tried the grapefruit diet. There are abundant versions of “Mayo diet” on the internet and a statement on the Mayo Clinic website says that for some people the diets can be dangerous.
Grapefruit Diet Menu includes juice (Unofficial Mayo Clinic Diet)
Breakfast:
- 1/2 grapefruit or 4 oz. unsweetened grapefruit juice
- 2 slices of bacon
- 2 eggs (prepared in any way)
Lunch:
- 1/2 grapefruit or 4 oz. unsweetened grapefruit juice
- Unlimited meat prepared in any way
- Salad and or raw veggies (any dressing, {not low fat or fat free})
Dinner:
- 1/2 grapefruit or 4 oz. unsweetened grapefruit juice
- Vegetables cooked in butter or any seasoning
- Unlimited meat or fish prepared in any way
Bedtime Snack:
1 glass tomato juice or 1 glass skim milk
Vegetables from the following list:
- Lettuce
- Peas
- Radishes
- Red onions
- Spinach
- Bell peppers
- Broccoli
- Cabbage
- Carrots
- Cucumbers
- Green onions
Important Instructions to be followed while taking Grapefruit diet plan:
- The grapefruit is important because it acts as a catalyst that starts the burning process.
- At any meal you may eat until you are full – until you cannot eat any more.
- Do not remove anything from the diet, especially do not skip bacon at breakfast or omit salads. It is the combination of foods that burn fat.
- Cut down on caffeine- it affects the insulin balance that hinders the burning process. Try to limit to 1 cup per meal at mealtime.
- Do not eat between meals. If you eat the combination of food suggested you will not be hungry.
- Do not eat desserts, bread, and white vegetables or sweet potatoes. You may double or triple helpings of meat, salad, or vegetables. Eat until you are stuffed. The more you eat of the proper combination of food, the more you lose.
- Note that the diet completely eradicates sugar and starches, which are lipids and form fat. Fat does not form fat; it helps burn it. You can fry food in butter and use butter generously on vegetables.

Cons:
- Does not teach self-control
- Has a shortage of calories
- Original plan had no exercise new plan recommends it
- Not vegetarian friendly – unless you take supplements
