Salt is essential part of human diet since many decades. Salt makes the food tasty. Just imagine, how awkward without salt the diet is for us! Some persons have to face diet without salt if the doctor advises to prevent consuming salt in food. Real fact is that Salt has very harmful effects if it is consumed in overlimit. There are two white poison includes sugar and salt in modern age. Salt intake is developing some serious dieses like Heartburn, Osteoporosis, Hypertention, Gastric Cancer, etc. Reduction in salt intake can save many lives.

According to a new study, 100,000 heart attacks and 92,000 deaths can be prevented by Reducing salt in the American diet as little as one-half teaspoon or three grams per day. Dr. Kirsten Bibbins-Domingo of the University Of California Professor said that the advantages of the USA population would be comparable to avoid smoking by 50 percent, significantly lowering obesity rates and giving cholesterol drugs to virtually everyone to prevent heart attacks.

Salt is extensively overused in the US, UK, Ireland, even 75% to 80% comes from processed food. Normally men eat average 10.4 gms and women 7.3 gms per day. Use of Salt is rising every day. High Salt intake is responsible to increase high blood pressure and heart disease. There is 20% of salt intake from meat products and more than 35% of salt intake from cereal products.

In New England, Journal of Medicine researchers reported that a reduction of 1 gram would prevent 11,000 to 23,000 strokes, 18,000 to 35,000 heart attacks and 15,000 to 32,000 deaths from any reason. Reduction Salt is most profitable for women. Reduction in salt is saving 24 billion U.S. dollars in health costs per year,

The researchers wrote, “Even if the federal government were to bear the entire cost of a regulatory program designed to reduce salt consumption, the government would still be expected to realize cost savings for Medicare, saving $6 to $12 in health expenditures for each dollar spent on the regulatory program“.

In comments, Dr. Lawrence Appel and Cheryl Anderson of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore said that the new study may be underestimating the benefits. They also added that it did not take into account how it would help children or the fact that lower salt intake may reduce the risk of stomach cancer, kidney disease, congestive heart failure and osteoporosis.

The Salt Institute director of technical and regulatory affairs, in a news release, Morton Satin said, “Salt reduction doesn’t provide any positive health benefits and may diminish benefits when it relates to diet.”

Reduction in Salt is very benefitial for African Americans, who are more likely to develop high blood pressure. Cutting salt by 3 g per day is very effective for reducing death rates among people with hypertension than taking medication to control blood pressure.
