In the area of the navel, when something from the abdomen area slips out of place causing a lump or bulge, belly button hernia occurs. It may have fluid, part of an organ, or part of the abdomen tissue. Belly button hernia is also caused by ascites (fluid in abdomen) commonly seen in cirrhosis of liver which cause pressure on the abdominal wall. To avoid serious complications, surgery is recommended at the right time in adults. Soreness and pain are the side effects of belly button hernia in adults. Belly button hernias are entirely different and have no similarities with paraumbilical hernia. The patient is generally corpulent and between the age of thirty to fifty years. Obesity in women with flabby abdominal muscles and repeated pregnancy are important precipitating causes of belly button hernia in women.

Causes of Belly Button Hernia:

  • Heavy weight lifting
  • Obesity
  • Tumor in abdominal cavity
  • Secretion of fluid in the abdomen
  • Due to multiple pregnancies
  • Heavy work load during delivery period

Symptoms of belly button hernia:

The signs and symptoms of Belly Button Hernia are different from person to person. The Symptoms of belly button hernia are a bulge around the navel area, swollen around the navel area and burning sensation around the navel area with or without pressure applied. The bulge becomes more visible on bending, coughing, lifting or sneezing. The skin around the hernia may be discolored from a light reddish color, to grey or even blue.

Belly Button Hernia leads to two conditions when it is not treated properly:

  • The hernia is compressed and the blood supply is stopped to that part of intestine. This leads to constipation and gangrene (the particular part of intestine dies).
  • The hernia cannot be pushed back into the abdominal cavity and left confined which leads to severe pain and nausea.

Treatment of Belly button hernia in adults:

If the person is overweight and the hernia is symptomless, then operation can be delayed until weight has been reduced. Patient can take home remedy like slippery elm in chamomile tea; a paste of slippery elm can be mixed in chamomile tea and sipped daily twice, during this period. By strengthening the weak muscles, this herbal remedy helps in cases of belly button hernia. American ginseng and aloe vera juice is also helpful.

Belly button hernia in adults is diagnosed through a physical examination and other tests such as x rays or ultra sounds. For Belly button hernia in adults, surgery is the only treatment suggested. The surgeon will manage a local anesthesia and then make an incision under the belly button. The surgeon may either push the protrusion back inside the abdomen or remove it, depending upon the size and the attachment of the surrounding tissues. To repair the cut, stitches are used. To give extra strength to the weak muscles a piece of mesh over the weak spot may also be added. Medication to manage pain and inflammation may also be prescribed. Most of the hernia patients return to their normal life in a few days after the surgery.

Weight management if one is overweight, avoid straining or stretching as it could reopen the wound and increase swelling is recommended. After surgery do not lift heavy objects for the first couple of weeks. Females who have this problem must have it corrected before pregnancy, as being pregnant will increase abdominal pressure.
