According to Hindu Puranas, the day marks the beginning of Treta Yug the birthday of Parasurama- the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu and Lord Vishnu is worshipped on this day. Goddess Lakshmi also worshipped on this day. At Puri Jagannath temple Candanotsavam is performed for Lord Jagannath.
