April 22 is Earth Day
Today is Earth Day. Earth Day is celebrated on 22 April, Earth Day is a day intended to inspire awareness and understanding of the Earth’s environment. This date is Spring in the Northern Hemisphere and Autumn in the southern hemisphere. It was founded by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson as an environmental teach in 1970 and is celebrated in many countries each year.

Earth Day Themes & lesson Plans

Earth Day is a global holiday to celebrate the wonder of life on our planet. National Environmental Education Foundation has selected the Theme “Be Water Wise!” For Earth Day. For Earth Day this year, the seventh generation has developed four lesson plans that teachers can use with their students.

Three lessons to help students to explore and understand how the products in their homes can affect the indoor environment where they spend much of his time. The fourth lesson is preparing them to gather information to use an online carbon footprint calculator.

Earth Day 2009 Lesson Plans

The Environment in Your Home : This Earth Day Lesson helps raise awareness among young students that some of the chemicals in their homes are not only dangerous for them to use, but may have a lasting effect.

The Effectiveness of Cleaning Products : In this two-part study, students first test of different detergents to assess effectiveness. To follow up to explore the potential environmental consequences of the various cleaning agents and factor that information in how they determine “best” produsct.

The Inside Environment : This lesson plan helps students to identify some of the potential sources of indoor air pollution in their homes, and shows some ways that they can work with the rest of the household to create a healthier indoor environment.

What’s your family’s carbon footprint? : Seventh Generation has developed an online calculator that students can use to measure their carbon footprint. This session provides worksheets to help students to collect the necessary data for input in the calculator, and understand the results.

Earth Day 2009 will be a day of action and participation in society, to defend the Green Generation’s Basic Principles:

  • An individual’s commitment to responsible, sustainable consumption.
  • A carbon-free future based on renewable energy that will end our dependence on fossil fuels, including coal.
  • Creating a new green economy, lift people out of poverty by creating millions of quality green jobs and transform the global education in green.
