Halloween is one of the oldest holidays and started by the Celtic people over 2000 years ago. After Christmas, it is one of the most popular holidays; however millions of people celebrate Halloween in spite of not knowing its origin and history. Halloween’s history makes more interesting the holiday.
October 31 was the night of Celtic people’s festival of dead Lord Samhain. The Celtics feared the night of 31 October and as well as Samhain. Therefore they tried to please him, Celtic priests, Druids detained cruel fire cremations in his honor.
On this festival, every year the Druids burned criminals, prisoners, and animals alive. The bonfires were considered sacred and made from oak. The Druids saw the omens this night, they believed that the power to make prediction of future would be strongest on this night of the year because the spirits were allowed to roam free. They also believed that some powerful and wild spirits were evil. This is the reason of the Celtic people sported costumes during the Samhain festival to frighten the spirit.
Some view Halloween is a time of superstitions, ghosts, goblins and evil spirits that should be avoided at all costs but for others it is a time for fun, putting on costumes, trick-or-treating, and having theme parties.
