The day when India woke up to freedom back in 1947 was a day of great celebration. After more than two hundred years of British rule, India finally won freedom on 15th August, 1947. 15th August is celebrated to commemorate the birth of the world’s biggest democracy as a national holiday. Cultural programs and flag-hoisting ceremonies are the predominant affair of the day. The prime minister raises the national flag at the Red Fort in New Delhi in this day. Schools and colleges around the country organize flag hoisting ceremony and various cultural activities within their respective premises.
