Gokulashtami festival celebrates the birth of Lord Sri Krishna. It is observed on ashtami of Krishna Paksh or the 8th day of the dark fortnight in the month of Sravana. Krishna is a deity worshiped across many traditions in Hinduism in a variety of perspectives. This year Janmashtami festival will come on Friday, 14th August 2009.
Janmashtami is the joyful celebration of Lord Krishna’s birth. On this day many people do puja and bhajan and many people also observes many type of fast like, Nirjal fast, Phalahar fast etc. On this day many Krishna’s temple are decorated colorfully and people sing devotional songs and bhajan and dancing with great joy. On the second day of the Janmashtami, a popular ceremony is known as ‘Dahi Handi’ takes place wherein the pot containing curd or butter or milk is broken by the youth.
