World Environment Day is one of the main reasons the vehicles of the UN (United Nations) stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action. World Environment Day is celebrated each year on 5 June. The abbreviation is written as “WED”.
World Envrionment Day is a day when people focus on the environment and it is celebrated in over 100 countries around the world. The Theme for 2009 is climate change and the broader consequences of environmental change. The Theme for WED (World Environment Day) in 2009 is “Your Planet Needs You-UNite to Combat Climate Change”. The Wrold Environment day’s agenda is to:
- Empower people to become active agents of sustainable and equitable development;
- Advocate partnership which will ensure all nations and peoples is a safer and more prosperous future.
- Give a human face to environmental issues;
- Promote an understanding that communities are critical to changing attitudes towards environmental issues;
History of World Environment Day
World Environment Day (WED) falls each year on 5th June. The World Environmental Day History is very simple. World Environment Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972 to mark the opening of the Stockholm Conference on Human Environment.
The highlight is entrusted to the UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme), whose international headquarters are in Nairobi, Kenya. World Environment Day is designed to promote environmental issues to become active agents of sustainable and fair development. World Environment Day is hosted by a different location each year.
This year’s conference took place in San Francisco, California, from 1-5 June 2005, the first time the conference has been held in the USA. Intention to celebrate the World Environmental Day every year to show the world that it is important for the environment and provoke political attention to it. World Environment Day, this approach, raise awareness, and encourages people to voice their thoughts and do their utmost to improve the environment.
World Environment Day Activities
Every year different activities and subjects chosen to be discussed on 5th June. The organizations set up various activities and discussions about the importance of environment in each year, so that understanding can be more easily between different communities on the central role in the environment in our daily lives.
Planned activities before and during the World Environment Day is far everything. Essentially it is a “public event”, with colorful activities such as street meetings, bicycles parades, green concerts, essay competitions in schools, tree planting, recycling and cleaning campaigns.
