From an Irish myth about a man named as “Stingy Jack”, the initiation of the Jack O Lantern design came. Jack was unable to claim his soul for Hell as he was banned from heaven and the Devil. Jack had no light for his way and was fated to wander the earth. An ember from the fires of Hell, the Devil threw him which he put into a hollowed out turnip. Due to this story the name soon become Jack O’ Lantern.
In 1846-47, a great potato famine took place which caused refugees to flee. Their beliefs and traditions were done as they came to America. A large quantity of pumpkins was available while turnips were not. Therefore the pumpkin carved with Jack’s portrait became the Jack O’ Lantern that is often placed outside throughout the Halloween season.
