Earwax is a yellowish waxy substance discharged in the ear canal which is composed of a mixture of skin, hair, sweat and other debris. It is also recognized as cerumen and serves as defense between the ear drum and external part of the ear. It aids in cleaning and lubrication of the ears, filtering dust and preventing infection of the ear canal. Earwax also gives some defense from bacteria, fungi, insects and water. There are two types of earwax like Soft wet earwax and Hard wet earwax. Soft wet earwax is moist and sticky while hard wet earwax is drier.
Soft wet earwax is more common in children and hard wet earwax is more common in adults. Generally the color of earwax is light brown to dark orange and it is more common in children. Cotton swabs and other small objects used to remove earwax can create a problem. Making more wax buildup and maybe hearing problems they cause earwax to be pushed farther back in the ear. Ear pain, hearing loss, a feeling of fullness in the ear, or tinnitus (hearing noises in the ear) all can be caused due to a buildup of wax in ear and its severity depends on the amount of wax involved.
Tips for removing ear wax
Ear-drops:
To remove earwax put few drops of ear-drops into the ear and for some time lie on your side with the affected ear facing upwards. This let the eardrops to saturate into the wax and soften it. The plug should ultimately soften and may slowly fall out of the ear if you replicate this 2 to 3 times a day for 3 to 5 days. Ear-drops should be used at room temperature and it is not appropriate if you have a perforate eardrum.
Ear irrigation:
If the earwax blockage continue even after using ear-drops ear irrigation may be suggested. Washing out the ear canal with water is involved in ear irrigation to take away any excess earwax. Mineral oil or baby oil can be used to soften the wax. Pour few drops of oil into your ear canal using an eyedropper and keep the head tilted to the side for few minutes while the oil sits in the ear canal. Mixture of hydrogen peroxide and water in equal parts can be used in place of mineral oil. Pour some drops into the ear canal and you will experience a bubbling sensation in the ear, Keep the solution in place until the bubbling has mostly stopped, generally around 10 or 20 minutes. Replicate these remedies twice a day for four or five days.
Rinsing:
A rubber-bulb syringe can be used when softened wax does not go away of the ear. To squirt warm water into the ear use a three-ounce rubber bulb syringe while the head is tilted to let the water to stay inside the ear. First straighten the ear canal by tilting the head and pulling on the outer ear and then tilting the ear to the side to let the water to drain out. Use a towel to completely dry the ear.
Other tips:
Cotton swab:
Make sure to stay on the outer ear when you are using cotton swab as it is not efficient at removing ear wax. Never stick the tip into the ear canal.
Hot Water Bottle:
Fill a hot-water bottle with warm water and lie on it, with the affected ear against the bottle it helps to melt the wax and let it to flow out of the canal naturally.
Using a wash cloth:
Use warm wash cloth to wipe away the excess ear wax from the creases and skin in the outer ear. Make sure to stay on the outer ear.
Saline spray or water:
To wash ear wax use a saline spray or water at room temperature. Drag the outside of the ear upward with one hand while softly squirting the saline or water into the ear.
Massage:
In order to loosen the wax, massage the area at the back the ear then pull on the ear while closing and opening your mouth.
