One of the largest manufacturers of laptops and PCs, Dell, is making a plunge into the mobile industry in India with the launch of Dell smartphones in India. With the launch of a major ad campaign in all major newspapers, the company is inviting “distributors” for their mobile phones. The upcoming phones in India include the Dell Aero and the Dell Streak, which seems to be one like the mini tablet rather than the smartphone, and also the Dell Lightening, which is a Windows Phone 7 based device. Yet the price of any of these dell mobiles is not declared, but it seems that dell will plan phone price to suite every indian pocket!
Claimed to be the lightest Android smartphone, the Dell Aero handset seems to be a good blend of style and technology. Accompanied by a 5 MP camera which enables quick and easy uploading to Flicker, Facebook, YouTube, Picasa and TwitPic, the smartphone is facilitated with a 3.5 inch nHD Display and social networking apps.
The Dell Aero smartphone enables PC-like web browsing experience with Flash Lite support which shall provide for streaming audio and video content. Also providing for connectivity to Wi-Fi hotspots, the phone supports onboard GPS system, Google Mobile Services, Android market place, YouTube, Google Maps, Google Talk, Gmail and Google search.
The Dell Streak handset will finally make its entry in India after its recent successful U.K. launch. The phones seems to be a 10mm-thick slab 1GHz Snapdragon device with a five-inch 800 x 480 LCD, and is provided with rounded edges on the two shorter sides which allow one to hold it comfortably. With a weight of about 220g, the phone can be operated in both the landscape and the portrait mode, and is provided with capacitive buttons (back, menu and home) and a mic on the right.
The Dell Streak smartphone is also accompanied by four physical buttons along the top ridge — volume rocker, power, and camera (two-stage button i.e. press half-way to focus). The phone comes with a 3.5mm headphone jack, USB mains adapter, USB cable, and a microfiber pouch (which doubles as a wiping cloth). The other noteworthy attributes of the phone include the front-facing VGA camera, proximity sensor, video chat apps such as Fring and Qik, five megapixel autofocus camera with its dual LED flash, 1530mAh battery, WiFi 802.11b/g connectivity, Android 1.6 OS, and many pre-loaded apps one of them being the QuickOffice, which not only can view Microsoft Office documents (.doc, .docx, .xls, xlsx, .ppt, and .pptx) but also makes a great file browser and can open other file types using their associated apps. The engadget image shows clearly its appearance.
The Dell Lightening device seems to be the most ultimate Windows Phone 7 device yet, with the leaked specifications of the device. This is a portrait slider, and is accompanied by a 1GHz QSD8250 Snapdragon processor, WVGA 4.1-inch OLED display, AT&T and T-Mobile 3G, five megapixel autofocus camera, 1GB of flash with 512MB RAM plus 8GB of storage on a MicroSD card, GPS, accelerometer, compass, FM radio, and full Flash support including video playback. The images from engadget do reveal its design.
On the whole, the new Dell smartphones and devices which are coming to India soon, do seem to be appealing and innovative in design, and rather attractive in technology. Hope the Aero, Lightening and Streak make an impactful presence.
