Another year, another Galaxy….Once a year, the South Korea-based technology giant “Samsung” takes some of its best material and slaps it together in to its flagship model known as Galaxy S —- For 2014, Samsung has launched Galaxy S5 with all advanced features and specifications at Mobile World Congress. However, 5.1” 1080p display, 16 MP camera and 2GB of RAM are not vital Android specs monster, because these features are available today in all high-end Smartphones. But Samsung’s new launch is ready to get more attention with plenty of new features including heartbeat sensor, fingerprint scanner, 128GB memory support, kid friendly mode, faster Wi-Fi, etc. As well, it will give a tough fight to Sony’s latest flagship model – Xperia Z2, which is launched with noise-cancelling technology and ultra-high-definition video recording. Therefore, people are getting confused which among these is better…comparison is one of the best ways to make it clear. Here, we have compared features and specifications of both devices to decide which one is better.

Samsung Galaxy S5 vs Sony Xperia Z2 Comparison

Design:

In designing, Galaxy S5 is not so impressive because it wraps with similar design language of Galaxy Note 3 and Note 10.1 2014 edition. However, the look and feel is slightly different. Still, Samsung used plastic for the chassis but new performed pattern for the back cover with four color choices including Charcoal Black, Shimmery White, funky Electric Blue, and tacky Copper Gold.

On the other hand, Sony Xperia Z2 has the design just like previous models…It is intended with Sony’s stunning OmniBalance design language. It is wrapped with metal frame, tempered-glass front and back panels and silver power button that make it better in terms of looks than Samsung’s device because still Samsung has used plastic design. There is no more difference in dimensions as Samsung Galaxy S5 stands with 142.0 x 72.5 x 8.1mm, while Sony Xperia Z2 has 146.8 x 73.3 x 8.2mm. In the weight department, Sony Xperia Z2 is lighter at 145 grams compared to Galaxy S5 – 158 grams.

In terms of design, Sony Xperia gets more attention.

Display:

The Samsung Galaxy S5 is just 0.1 smaller than Sony Xperia Z2. Galaxy S5 offers 5.1-inch Super AMOLED display with full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, while Xperia Z2 offers 5.2-inch Full HD Triluminos IPS display with resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. Samsung has also included new adaptive display technology that adjusts brightness of the screen according to environment. Both have plenty of punch, but this time Sony has added Live Color LED tech to generate brighter and more colorful images.

Both displays are very good in performance, so it is very difficult to find out any difference between them. If you consider pixel density to choose good one, then Samsung’s device with a pixel count of 431ppi edges ahead of Sony’s 424ppi. Both are sharp and packed full of detail, so in terms of display both are best.

Camera:

No confusion about camera feature because Sony’s Xperia Z2 is a clear winner, which offers 20.7-megapixel sensor on the rear, while Galaxy S5 gives 16-megapixel rear snapper. Samsung offers auto-focusing at a super-quick 0.3 seconds and new selective focus mode by which you can change focal point after shooting photos. It has also included new HDR Live mode to balance the light and dark part of the photographs. On the other hand, Sony has also offered Exmor RS camera with Sony G Lens and Sony Bionz. Sony comes with new custom camera modes like TimeShift video to take slow motion footage.

Both have front-snapper for video chat – Samsung S5 supports 2.1 megapixel and Sony Xperia Z2 Supports 2.2 megapixel sensor. As well, you can record 4k video on both devices if you want to shoot ultra high definition footage. Both have SteadyShot digital image stabilisation feature for video.

Hardware & software:

The Galaxy S5 and Sony Xperia Z2 are powered by Android’s latest Kit Kat operating system with clutter-free Touch Wiz user interface where icons are larger and more visible. In terms of processor, Samsung uses 2.5 GHz Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor with an extra 2GB of RAM for multitasking performance, while Sony Xperia Z2 uses the fastest 2.3 GHz 801 MSM8974-AB processor with 3GB of RAM, which comes with 14% faster Krait 400 processor cores, 28% faster Adreno 330 graphic and 45% improvement in camera sensor processing speed.

Both have similar internal storage capacity of 16GB, which can be expanded through microSD card support. On Samsung’s device, you can enjoy 128GB internal storage, while on Sony you can enjoy 64GB internal storage.

No doubt, the processor of Xperia Z2 is really good, but still Samsung Galaxy S5 is one step ahead due to its internal memory storage capacity.

Battery:

Battery is also another feature, in which Sony’s flagship is ahead of the Samsung’s offering. Sony device is powered by 3200mAh Li-on battery, while Samsung device is powered by 2,800mAh battery, which gives you up to 12 hours of video playback and 10 hours of web browsing on LTE. So with high powered battery, you can enjoy features of Smartphone for more time period. In which, Sony’s Z2 is better.

Other features:

Both are IP67 certified, so you can drop it in a glass of water or up to 3 meters of water for up to 30 seconds without causing any serious damages. The Galaxy S5 comes with extra features like fingerprint scanner and heart rate monitor, while Z2 has included large multimedia focus with a bright vibrant display and stereo speaker. In terms of connectivity, both are best, giving bluetooth, Wi-Fi, 3G, GPRS, etc.

Overall, both phones are good in all aspects…both are very close to each other in terms of all specifications and features. But as per my choice, you should prefer Sony Xperia Z2 which stands with little more better features than Samsung S5. However, Samsung has also offered several advanced features with this new device, so you should choose the phone as per your requirement and of course, your budget.
