Speaking about Floating Touch, here is a brief explanation about it. When you touch the screen of your smartphone, an event occurs and is called the touch event. There are X-Y grid of electrodes covering the screen, and when a finger is near the electrodes, the capacitance charges will be measured and thus we can accurately pin-point the location of the finger.

Now, two types of capacitive sensors are used for touch screens and they are mutual-capacitance and self-capacitance. Mutual capacitance is mainly used for multi-touch detection, while self-capacitance is for more accurate detection of the finger which is further away from sensors, but does not allow multi-touch detection. So, for the effect of floating touch, both the mutual and self capacitance have been combined. Mutual-capacitance will be used for detecting normal touch on the screen, while self-capacitance will be used for detecting a finger which will hover above the screen, thereby giving the “floating effect”.
