www.namus.gov is the official site of the NamUs. The abbreviation ‘NamUs’ stands for National Missing and Unidentified Persons System. NamUs is the free online system which can be searched by law enforcement officials, medical examiners, coroners and the general public to solve these cases. It is the clearinghouse for missing persons and unidentified decedent records.
NamUs has two Database, Unidentified Decedents and Missing Persons Database. Unidentified Decedents database contains information entered by medical examiners and coroners and Missing persons Database contains information entered by anyone. Unidentified decedents are people who have died and whose bodies have not been identified. NamUs offers the facility to print missing person’s posters and even map out possible travel routes in a search for a missing person. Any persons can search this both database using characteristics such as sex, race, distinct body features and even dental information.
NamUs also offers free DNA testing and other forensic services like anthropology and odontology assistance.
