Dual-screen phones have had only limited success so far. The main concern of dual-screen phones is battery performance as it feeds two large screens. To get better battery life from a smartphone, Moscow-based Yota Devices unveiled an Android smartphone named YotaPhone that has an LCD display on front and e-ink power-saving display on the back. It is the first Android Phone in the world to have dual screen: an LCD screen and an EPD (electronic paper display).
YotaPhone was showcased in January at CES 2013 and in Mobile World Congress 2013. It won the CES 2013 Award for its innovation. This stylish and slim phone has unique design with dual displays. Dual-screen improves usability and battery life. The difference between both displays is that e-ink display uses a less battery power and can be viewed in bright sunlight. Both displays have different functions and purposes.
The LCD display is perfect for watching videos, playing games, browsing photos and other usual functions, while the electronic paper display is perfect for streaming information like messages, weather alerts, notifications & social network updates; reading content-rich news; browsing the internet, writing texts and checking emails. The e-ink display saves the shown information and display without draining the battery.
Users can access information even if the battery dies. The information updates itself in real time. This feature is useful for boarding passes, tickets, maps and a host of other situations. The e-ink display uses battery only when you refresh the screen. Users can view the notifications on the e-ink dual display without unlocking the phone. Instead of home button, it has a very intuitive swipe function under the LCD.
Simply, swipe halfway from right to left to go back and totally to go home. Hold your finger in the middle of this area for the task-switcher. The e-ink dual display also has the same gesture for some basic controls. Swiping from top to bottom of the screen with two fingers takes a screenshot and copies it to the rear screen.
The LCD and EPD are of same size: 4.3 inches with different resolutions. The color display comes with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels, and the black and white ePaper display has a resolution of 640 x 360 pixels. The screens are covered with scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass. It is also the first smartphone to have Corning’s 3D Gorilla Glass.
It is based on Android 4.2, Jelly Bean OS and powered by a 1.7GHz dual core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor with 2GB of RAM. It has 32GB built-in storage, which is non-expandable. There are two cameras: front and rear. The rear camera is of 13MP with AF and LED flash, and the front facing camera is of 1MP with 3G video calling. The rear camera is located at the bottom of the screen rather than the top.
It features a decent 1800mAh battery that delivers up to 12 hours of battery life while using the LCD screen. Connectivity features of the device are NFC, WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth v4.0 and GPS w/A-GPS + Glonass. The company has created numerous apps for YotaPhone, so that users can make the best use of the EPD. The weight and dimensions of the phone are 140 g and 133.6 x 67 x 9.99 mm respectively.
The company has merged the power button and the SIM tray slot into one. To wake the phone, users are required to push the SIM tray. If you want to remove the SIM, the pinhole button will eject the SIM tray and make the power button unusable till you replace the SIM tray.
The YotaPhone will hit the German market in November, 2013 with a price tag of €500 (US$663).
