Adobe Photoshop has reincarnated at the onset of its 20th anniversary with a surfeit of new and improved features. The CS5 version of Adobe Photoshop takes a big leap into the world of 3D and prides in the addition of some extra video features plus a feature that would never fail to interest photographers around the world – Content Aware Fill. Other significant developments in this new version include Intelligent selection technology, Advanced HDR processing, Improved raw processing, Extended painting effects, Localised warp tool, Auto lens correction, Workspace management, Advanced 3D options and 30 JDI (Just Do it) options.
Other worthwhile features of this new version are the options of Smart Radius and Refined Edge that makes smart and precise selections with ease. Especially the very fine objects like fur and hair; selecting them becomes efficiently convenient and simple with options like Edge detection and Smart Radius. Moreover, a lot of minor feature requests are added at the same time taking care that no major interface changes are done to facilitate regular users of Photoshop ease in operation. The new version just doesn’t cease amazing you with yet another interesting feature called HDR (High Dynamic Range imaging) toning. This option is available under Image>Adjustments. It gives you the power to transform a single or multiple images and give them a HDR feel by adjusting edge pixels, tone, detail and color. This process can also be termed tone mapping and is effectively used by photographers when their shots are characterized by difficult scenes such as interiors with windows or landscapes with bright skies.
Another amazing addition amongst the new tools of Adobe Photoshop CS5 is Puppet Warp that is a web grid that provides you the ability to perform an advanced warp on localized objects in an image. You have certain anchor points to fixate on certain points of the image and can either fix or move the selected boundaries thus giving you the capability to bend and shape pixels as per your requirements. This feature helps in manipulating original shapes. Lens correction joins in as another new tool in this version where lens issues like chromatic aberrations and barrel and pincushion distortions can be easily corrected. The new version has also brought along with it the Adobe Camera Raw 6 (ACR6) that represents notable improvements as opposed to the older versions of the same. It has newer de-mosaicing routines and features like noise management the ACR6 understands the structure of noise at different ISO sensitivities and image densities thus allowing the management of noise in a much more effective manner than before.
Finally, CS5 has come out with a new MiniBridge panel that allows you to browse through the images straight in the Photoshop interface. It is a more compact and faster loading version of Bridge for those who like finding an image file right at their Photoshop workstation with ease. Smaller improvements include better looking brushes tools that mimic real brushes with all their life-like shapes and sizes, bristle lengths, stiffness, angle, length and spacing. It behaves like a real brush with the bristles twisting on application of pressure. These are some really noteworthy changes that would change the face of Photoshop utilities to greater extents.
