The 17 year old teen boy Zac Sunderland has become the youngest person to sail around the world alone. The Southern Californian Zac was completed the 45, 000 km (28,000mile) trip in 13 months. Zac crossed three oceans and five seas, and crossed the equator twice. Zac Sunderland was 16 when he gone Marina del Rey on June 14, 2008 without fear aboard his boat.
Zac Sunderland was return to his home at Marina Del Rey, California late Thursday morning (July 16, 2009). Hundreds people gathered to meet to him and congratulation as he arrived at Marina del Rey in his 36-foot sailboat. His father’s company, Sunderland’s Yacht Management and Shipwrights, was his main sponsor. During his travels, he dealt with a pirate scare, broken wheel, broken forestay rigging, a broken roar, a broken bulkhead, and he was swamped and almost washed overboard by a huge wave off Grenada. For Zac, there were certainly some difficulties of being alone at sea for such long stretches.
Zac mainly ate freeze-dried and canned foods, fresh vegetables and drinking nothing but tepid, desalinated water during his trip. He said his challenge was the sleep deprivation when his boat broke down and he needed to guide it through the night. That pirate followed him and he was forced to call Australian authorities to scare them off. He also added, the biggest thing was having no typical and having every day be different.
One British Sailor Mike Perham also attempting to break the same record. He is a few months younger than Zac, who go solo around the world tour, and sailing a bigger faster boat. You can go on Zac Sunderland’s Web site, a series of videos document of his travels Here.
Congrats to Zac Sunderland for his success!
