A cinematic experiment, Life in a Day has been launched by youtube, with the grand ambition for documenting the lives of the 6.7 billion people on earth for a site with YouTube’s resources. People have 24 hours to capture a snapshot of their lives on camera on 24 July 2010. The most compelling and distinctive footage will be edited into an experimental documentary film. Ridley Scott is the producer and Kevin Macdonald is the director of that documentary film.

Participant must be at least 13 years old for participating in “Life in a day”. A YouTube account is required in order to upload footage. Between 24 July and 31 July, just click the “Submit” tab on Life In A Day channel and upload the footage directly from your computer. The “Submit” tab will become visible on 24 July. If anyone is under the age of legal majority in his/her country and his video makes it through the first stage of the selection process, then an email will be released a form to him/her, which his parents or legal guardians will need to sign and return, in order for his video to be considered further.

If participants do not have any additional way of recording (and monitoring) sound, then please be aware of the following:

  • The built-in microphone on your camera will struggle to record usable sound if your subject is any further then 3 feet away from the camera
  • Be aware of the background noise – try and record somewhere quiet, if possible
  • Avoid touching the microphone and think about where it’s positioned in relation to your subject
  • Watch out for wind when you’re outside. The sound of wind can drown out whatever sound you are trying to capture

The film, “Life in a Day” will be premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. You will be credited as a co-director and may be one of 20 contributors selected to attend the world premiere at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, if your video is selected for inclusion in the final film. The most compelling footage will be edited by the Oscar-winning film director, Kevin Macdonald. For more information, visit URL: http://www.youtube.com/lifeinaday.
