100 Mbps Internet for 100 million Americans in 10 years : National Broadband Plan

FCC stands for Federal Communications Commission. FCC is one of the biggest telecommunications controllers. Recently, FCC declared its National Broadband Plan. In America, people are much anticipated for this plan as reported on Tuesday. The Chairman of FCC named Julius Genachowski announced; by 2020 the agency wants 260 million Americans addicted up to 100 Mbps broadband.

The National Plan offers speed up to 100mbps to 100 million homes. The main aim of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is to connect 100 million Americans to 100Mbps Internet in next ten years. FCC wants to help for growing market for wireless services. With this plan, people can download movies in minutes instead of hours. This plan offers a wide range of services to American people.

FCC also said that many people don’t have broadband at home because they cannot afford it. In America only 65 percent people have broadband while in other countries like Singapore 88 percent or South Korea 95 percent. FCC wants to change the communication industry by developing better facility for American people as they can communicate, pay monthly bills, make travel plans and be entertained by movies and music.

For rural areas, the FCC Agency would subsidize broadband Internet access over next 10 years by making a combination Internet and cable set-top box, re-launch of 500MHz plan; range for wireless Internet access. But the more details about the plan are still insufficient. Still the news is not declared that who will pay for these plans.

FCC also said that this plan will also help to improve the quality of health care, education, job facility by creating jobs, and provide public safety and many more. This plan also will help health care because FCC believes that with broadband service, people can share of medical records and provide distant monitoring and diagnosis. FCC also believes that broadband communications can save as much as $700 billion in next 15 to 25 years.

Genachowski said in an interview “We’ve developed a plan that is a real win-win for everyone involved and we have every expectation that it will work,”.

Genachowski also added “Our plan will set goals for the U.S. to have the world’s largest market of very high-speed broadband users. A “100 Squared” initiative 100 million households at 100 megabits per second to unleash American ingenuity and ensure that businesses, large and small, are created here, move here, and stay here. And we should stretch beyond 100 megabits. The U.S. should lead the world in ultra-high-speed broadband testbeds as fast, or faster, than anywhere in the world. In the global race to the top, this will help ensure that America has the infrastructure to host the boldest innovations that can be imagined. Google announced a one gigabit testbed initiative just a few days ago and we need others to drive competition to invent the future.”

Features of this plan:

  • This plan will increase to develop public/private partnerships to increase Internet adoption, so that children can use the Internet adeptly and safely. Programs like the NCTA’s new A+ program are a model.
  • This plan also will help to improve the E-Rate program for Internet connections in classrooms and libraries.
  • To use government rights of way and conduits to lower the cost of wired and wireless broadband deployments.
  • This plan also helps to develop the FCC’s rural telemedicine program to connect thousands of additional clinics and eliminate bureaucratic barriers to tele-health.
