The man, by whom the popular Taco Bell food chain was launched, died at his home in Rancho Santa Fe on Sunday, 17 January 2010. He was survived by his wife, Martha, three sisters, two sons, a daughter, and four grandchildren. Glen W. Bell Jr. was of 86. First Taco Bell was opened by him in 1962, after experimenting with some other fast food-style restaurants in Southern California.

Bell was one of the handful entrepreneurs by whom the landscape and eating habits of post-World War II America were changed with chains of low-cost restaurants which offered assembly-line fast food. Unlike McDonald’s or Carl’s Jr serve the hamburgers, however an adventurous alternative of tacos and burritos was offered by Bell.
Glen William Bell, Jr. was an American businessman, during World War II, He served in the US Marine Corps. In San Bernardino in 1948, he started his first hot dog stand called Bell’s Drive-In after leaving military life in 1946. He decided to go solo in 1962 and the El Tacos was sold to his partner and first Taco Bell was opened by him. In 1964, Bell franchised his restaurant then His Company rose quickly, and the 868 restaurant chain was later sold to PepsiCo in 1978 for $125 million in stock.

Glen Bell was an avid Mexican food take-out customer and aware of the hang-ups in ordering tacos to go from a full-service restaurant. He started by selling different hot dogs, as well as a chili dog in a Mexican neighborhood. He researched tacos at the same time.
