Rio de Janeiro offered to take the Olympics to South America for the first time in 2016. He gained further momentum on Wednesday when the Brazilian city came off best in a technical assessment of the four candidate cities such as, Chicago, Rio de Janeiro, Madrid and Tokyo. The South American city Rio de Janeiro will be the first to host the Olympics game. International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced in Copenhagen after voting on October 2, 2009. The 103 members had started voting for 2016 International Olympic Committee electronically in a secret vote at 5:10 PM on October 2.

The 2016 host city picked with just some 50-plus votes. Chicago and Tokyo were eliminated after the first and second rounds of voting, respectively, while Rio de Janeiro took a significant lead over Madrid heading into the final round. At last Rio de Janeiro was announced as host of 2016 Olympic bid. The other cities will be eliminated one by one secures a majority.

The BBC said that the Olympic host city considered by the IOC’s voting member, political and social support, olympic village, past experience, and legacy. Barack Obama is the first US president to atrium the IOC for an Olympic bid. IOC decisions are always unpredictable, and, as usual, several competing factors are at play this year. Chicago was viewed as the front-runner to earn the vote.

According to the source, a city has to get a majority of votes in order to win. If no city receives a majority, voting moves on to a second round, with the city receiving the lowest number of votes being eliminated. There are many restrictions barring the bidding cities from communicating with or influencing directly the 115 voting members.
