For the PGA Tour, the FedEx Cup is a championship trophy. Since its introduction in 2007, PGA Tour has adjusted the rules around the FedEx Cup in each of the two year. To address issues that arose the previous year, mainly with the playoffs portion of the FedEx Cup, Each set of changes was introduced. Take a look on the FedExCup 2010 points – the rankings and standards that a player received.

In 112th place Tiger Woods finished, safe for the Barclays, but by no means certain of progressing to the second Playoff event, the Deutsche Bank, for which only the top 100 meet the criteria. Justin Leonard’s tie for 3rd pushes him 39 places to 70th, out of the instant danger zone and David Toms’ second place finish moved him 54 places up the Standings to 44th. Scott Piercy took the 125th and final spot to be eligible for the first Playoff at The Barclays by tying for 8th, his best of the season, moving up 15.

Playoff rewards

After The Tour Championship, the player with the most points wins the FedEx Cup itself and $10 million of a $35 million bonus fund. The runner-up gets $3 million, 3rd place $2 million, 4th place $1.5 million, 5th place $1 million, and so on down to $32,000 for 126th through 150th place, as of 2009.

FedEx Cup winner also receives a five year exemption on the PGA Tour. Starting 2008, any player between the Final Top 30 FedEx Cup Points Leaders after the Tour Championship, if not exempt by other means, is placed in PGA Tour Exemption Category 18, which is just above the category for the Top 125 Official Money List leaders. For the next year, remaining FedEx Cup qualifiers will come from the PGA Tour’s Official Money List. The top 125 players (as always) on the money list will be fully exempt for the following year, with other golfers either eligible through other exemptions or needing to qualify by other means.
