Does anyone know how long the wires are from the laser to the control box? Cannot find that specification anywhere…..
Does anyone know how this is activated by the door opener? Is it a motion switch in the control unit that senses the vibration (as I sort of suspect from the label that shows that it has a certain direction that has to face UP and the instructions say you have to mount it “…ON THE CASE OF THE GDO…”)? I would like to mount the control unit AWAY from the actual GDO motor (above in the attic, so that I can place the laser in the place that I want). And there is no actual hardwired connection between the control unit and the GDO so I have to believe that maybe it’s SENSING that the motor has kicked in in order to turn on the laser?? Thoughts???
The wires from the lasers are only about 3 ft long. From testing, it looks like the device is triggered by vibration, which I would guess it the reason it says to mount close to the garage door. When I tested it mounted in the attic, the device would not activate. When I set it on top of the garage door, it activated as soon as the garage started moving. I didn’t trust this so I set up the unit in the kitchen. I tapped the case of the control unit and it activated. Seems crazy, but I am going to assume the vibration is the only trigger, not exactly what I expected.
With the wires only being 3 ft, you are almost forced to buy RCA extension cables (the lasers plug into the control unit via RCA connectors) in order to have a clean looking installation. I did find one picture from Genie that showed the lasers mounted on the garage door opener, but I can’t imagine most would have their openers far enough to the front of the garage to be able to point the laser at anything but the sides of their vehicles.
