Computers have become the most commonest of gadgets in every household and since newer and updated versions keep getting introduced every now and then in the market, most households tend to have more than one personal computers.

In such an event where there are two computers and you want to transfer huge files from one computer to another or connect them to the same printer or even get the internet connection of one computer available to another you have an option of getting a direct cable connection done between the PC’s and achieve multiple usage of both the computers. This way you are able to create your very own home network all by yourself at no extra service costs.

Following are the steps that you have to follow to bring about a connection between two pc’s at home using a serial cable:
- Take a serial cable and connect computer 1 to computer 2 on Com1.
- Click on the Control Panel in your computer 1 and select the Network icon and open it.
- Now click on ‘Add’
- You get an option called Service. Double click on it.
- Click on the option ‘Microsoft’
- Now double click on ‘File and Printer sharing’ for Microsoft networks.
- Click on ‘Identification’ tab.
- You need to name the other computer. Give a name that you can easily remember, and fill out the other lines with random names.
- Now click on ‘Configuration’ tab.
- You would come across a button that says ‘File and Print sharing’. Click on it. Two boxes appear in this window which has to be checked, if not checked by default.
- Now click on ‘OK’
- Click on ‘Add’
- You get an option called ‘Protocol’, double click on that option.
- Next you have to click on ‘Microsoft’
- Double click on ‘IPX/SPX compatible protocol’.
- After the protocol is installed double click on ‘Dial Adapter’
- Click on ‘OK’
- Now the computer loads the drivers and asks for restart. So restart your computer.
- Repeat these steps for computer 2 exactly how it was done for computer 1.
- On the host computer you need to indicate the files and folders as ‘Shared’. In order to do this all you need to do is right click the file or folder or any other program that you would like to share with the other computer. Click on ‘Sharing’. As soon as you do that a window opens.
- Click on ‘Shared as’
- You may or may not click on ‘Full’
- On both the computers click on ‘Start’. Go to ‘Program’ and simultaneously open ‘Accessories’.
- Name one computer as host and the other as client and follow the steps in Program.
- Select the serial number through Com1.
- Now you wait until computer 2 asks for the name of computer 1 (host computer) and type the name you entered at the identification step on the host computer.
- That is it. You get connected and now you would be able to conveniently share and transfer necessary data from computer 1 to computer 2.
