The latest smartphone, multimedia-heavy N8 was announced by Nokia on Tuesday, 27 April 2010. Multimedia-heavy N8 is featuring a 12-megapixel camera, HD video recording and the latest iteration of the Symbian OS, which is used first time in phone and with it N8 will prove that Nokia’s software is also a commendable competitor. Multimedia-heavy N8 will be available in the third quarter of 2010, for an unlocked carrier-independent model it will cost under $500 and would be able to work on US networks of AT&T and T-Mobile. Launch of Nokia N8 smart phone in india is also expected very soon.
According to Nokia, “The Finnish Company has promised Symbian 3 phones will be easier to use than their predecessors will. The N8 will be the first in a family of smartphones based on Symbian 3 that will be out in 2010.” According to a research note from CCS Insight, “The N8 is a pivotal device in Nokia’s effort to make its high-end phones credible again.” Customizable home screens, support for multitouch, single tap and faster multitasking will be allowed by new OS. With social networks, integration will also be provided by N8. According to Carolina Milanesi, research director at Gartner, “The improvements will help Nokia catch up with Apple and Android-backers like HTC and Motorola, but there is little that will set Nokia apart.”
Milanesi said, “Nokia’s biggest challenge will be to get users to pick up the phone and play with it, because the user interface looks just like the existing version of Symbian, which so many users dislike. It is only by using the new OS that the improvements can be seen.” A 3.5-inch touchscreen, a 12-megapixel camera with a Xenon flash and support for video recording at 720p are the features of N8. The other video features contain an HDMI port to connect to a TV and support for Dolby Digital Plus surround sound. With the use of 802.11n, which is becoming increasingly common on new smartphones, users will be able to search the Web. 16GB of memory and a micro SD card arte present in the phone.
However, Nokia is putting out its first phone with the N8, featuring the revamped Symbian 3 OS, which contains several new features, such as flick scrolling, multi-touch, and pinch-to-zoom. Symbian 3 adds several other features found on competing smartphone platforms, like multiple home screens and home screen widgets (similar to Android) for Facebook and Twitter, among others.
Before taxes or subsidies, N8 will cost €370 (US$495). It was believed that during the second quarter it would show up in stores. However, delay was proclaimed last week when Nokia presented its first-quarter results, which made its share price tank. According to analyst at CCS Insight, Geoff Blaber, “Shipping the phone by the second quarter was an aggressive target.” With this delay, Apple and Android camps got more time to develop their respective operating systems, solidifying their positions in the high-end smartphone sector, according to Blaber.
