Set Top Box (DVR):

Verizon is using the Motorola QIP6416 set-top box which looks like the craptastic Comcast DCT6412, but runs entirely different UI. The interface is very intuitive. It also includes a number of advanced shortcuts e.g. when watching TV, selecting up, down, left, or right on the direction button will take you as a shortcut to different modes instantly. Up takes you to a TV Guide split-screen with TV on the left, down takes you to a half-screen floating guide. Hitting Guide once takes you to a full-screen guide, pressing twice goes to split-screen. Hitting info once gives you a small popup, hitting it again takes you to a full-screen info page.

Verizon president for the New York region Jim Gerace said, “Our total fiber network delivers technology innovations like the FiOS TV multi-room DVR and on-screen Twitter and Facebook Widget applications that cable just can’t provide. This franchise agreement recognizes customers’ demand for choice in broadband, television and entertainment services.”

One Response to “Verizon FiOS TV review: Fiber-Optic TV and Internet of the future”

  1. By Richard D at 6th July, 2010

While I read all the glowing comments about FIOS (many probably writtten by Verizon staff) let it be known that I am a Cablevision customer who has tried Verizon twice and both times I cancelled my subscription because of very poor customer service as well as poor selection and pricing versus Cablevision.
In one instance, I cancelled my account withing the fifteen day window and was still charged for earlt termination which I disputed and after finally agreeing to pay the cancellation fee, I have now found that Verizon placed a chargeoff on my account and ultimately almost ruined my credit standing. My advice to anyone contemplating Verizon FIOS is to investigate their promises and beware of them when it comes to satisfying customer concerns or complaints.
